What do you get in your kundli?

Your kundli shows your lagna (rising sign) and the sign on each of the twelve houses, the position of the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, the birth star (nakshatra) of each planet, and your current dasha with the periods coming next.

Together these describe your nature, family, career, marriage, health and timing. The chart is read as one full picture, not as separate pieces.

What can your kundli tell you?

A kundli is best at showing patterns — your strong points, your challenges, and the periods when life moves fast or slow. Many people use it to understand their career direction, marriage timing, money habits and health cycles.

It does not fix your future. Think of it as a weather map for your life: it shows the climate, but you still choose how to walk through it.

How is a kundli calculated?

First, your birth time is converted to universal time using your birth place's location and timezone. Then each planet's position is worked out with standard astronomical formulas. Finally, the result is shifted to the fixed-star zodiac used by Vedic astrology. The rising sign is simply the sign coming up in the east at that exact moment.

New to the terms? The glossary explains every word — lagna, nakshatra, dasha and more — in one line each.

Kundli deep dive

01

What exactly is inside your kundli?

Your kundli is a snapshot of the sky at your birth moment, and it carries five layers. The twelve houses, each governing one area of life — self, family, courage, home, children, marriage, career and so on. The nine grahas — Sun through Saturn, plus Rahu and Ketu — placed in signs and houses. The twelve signs colouring each house. The nakshatra of the Moon, which fixes your birth star and starts your dasha chain. And the Vimshottari dasha table, your personal 120-year timeline. Read together, these layers turn a diagram of circles into a readable story about your nature and your timing.

02

How houses map to your life areas

The chart is read from your lagna, the sign that was rising in the east. That becomes house one, and the rest follow in order. House one is your body and personality; two, money and speech; three, courage and siblings; four, home and mother; five, children, study and sharpness of mind; six, work, health struggles and competition; seven, marriage and partnership; eight, sudden events and inheritance; nine, fortune, father and dharma; ten, career and public name; eleven, gains and friends; twelve, expenses, sleep and foreign lands. A planet's power is judged by which house it sits in, which sign it sits in, and which house it owns.

03

Why the ayanamsa decides how accurate your chart is

Vedic astrology uses the fixed-star zodiac, while the seasons have drifted about 24 degrees from it over the centuries. The correction that bridges this gap is called the ayanamsa. This tool uses the Lahiri ayanamsa — the value adopted by the Indian Calendar Reform Committee, and the one most official panchangs in India follow. If another site shows your planets a degree apart from ours, the ayanamsa is almost always the reason. Small shifts rarely change the story, but a planet sitting at the very edge of a sign can move across — which is why the exact birth time matters as much as the calculation standard.

04

Dashas, in plain words

Your dasha chain begins with the planet that rules your birth nakshatra, and it runs through all nine planets in a fixed order across 120 years. Each period has a flavour: a Sun dasha builds identity and recognition, a Moon dasha turns the mind toward home and feelings, Mars pushes action, Jupiter expands, Saturn slows and tests, and Rahu and Ketu stir and dissolve. Inside every big period sit smaller sub-periods, which is why one year inside a Saturn dasha can feel very different from the next. Check which dasha runs now before judging any placement — a weak-looking planet in its own dasha often outperforms a strong one elsewhere.

Kundli questions, answered
