Own Sign

A planet occupying a sign it rules — Sun in Leo, Moon in Cancer, Mars in Aries or Scorpio, Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces, Venus in Taurus or Libra, Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius. Own-sign placement is high dignity, just below moolatrikona and exaltation: the planet is master in its own house, expressing itself freely and supporting the houses it rules.

What does Own Sign mean in astrology?

A planet occupying a sign it rules — Sun in Leo, Moon in Cancer, Mars in Aries or Scorpio, Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces, Venus in Taurus or Libra, Saturn in Capricorn or Aquarius. Own-sign placement is high dignity, just below moolatrikona and exaltation: the planet is master in its own house, expressing itself freely and supporting the houses it rules.

The simplest dignity in astrology: a planet at home. When a planet occupies a sign it rules, tradition calls it swakshetra — "own field" — and treats it as strong, stable and self-directed. Not the ecstatic peak of exaltation, but something the classical texts often rate as more dependable: the owner in their own house, answerable to no one.

Seven planets, ten placements. Sun in Leo and Moon in Cancer, one each. Mars holds Aries and Scorpio; Mercury, Gemini and Virgo; Jupiter, Sagittarius and Pisces; Venus, Taurus and Libra; Saturn, Capricorn and Aquarius. (The nodes Rahu and Ketu are assigned various signs by different schools — no universal own-sign rule exists for them.) In Virgo, Mercury gains the extra title of moolatrikona, its finest practical placement.

Worked example: a chart has Venus at 12° Libra in the 7th house. Venus rules Libra, so it stands in its own sign, and it also rules the 7th — the house of partnership — while occupying it. This double ownership (lord in own house) is among the strongest single placements astrology recognises: the marriage significator at full strength in the marriage house. The reading is straightforward — refined partner expectations, genuine relationship skill, and Venus's houses (here the 7th and the 2nd, as Libra and Taurus lord) tend to prosper in their own time.

What an own-sign planet does for the chart beyond its own story: it strengthens everything it rules and everything it aspects. A Saturn in Aquarius lends the houses it owns steady governance wherever they fall; an own-sign Mars makes the chart's courage load-bearing.

Compared with exaltation, the difference is temperament. Exaltation is a guest of honour at someone else's feast — brilliant, peak-form, slightly situation-dependent. Own sign is the host — calm, consistent, permanent. For long-term reliability across dashas and transits, classical practitioners often prefer the host.
