A planet whose natural influence is severe, testing or disruptive. The natural malefics are Saturn (the greatest), Mars, the Sun in a milder degree, the waning Moon, and the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu. Malefics challenge, discipline and cut away — traditionally linked with obstacles and loss when weak or badly placed, but with exceptional achievement and resilience when strong, dignified and seated in houses that welcome effort.

What does Malefic mean in astrology?
The word scares people out of proportion to its meaning. A malefic (krura graha, "cruel planet") is not an evil planet — it is a strict one. Where benefics give, malefics condition. Their gifts are the ones nobody asks for and everybody eventually needs: discipline, endurance, the ability to survive what breaks others.
The roster: Saturn leads — delay, limitation, the weight of consequence. Mars follows — cuts, conflicts, accidents and the courage that survives them. The Sun ranks a milder malefic: too much heat, too much ego, though also the chart's vitality. The waning Moon slides into the list as its light fails. Rahu and Ketu count as malefics of a special kind — shadow planets whose disruptions are karmic and unpredictable rather than lawful like Saturn's.
A malefic's action in a chart is definitional rather than personal. Malefics in or aspecting a house apply pressure to its matters; in the 1st, a harder early life and a tougher constitution; in the 7th, friction in partnership; in the 10th, a career earned against resistance. Their dashas tend to compress difficulty into defined seasons — which is exactly why Vedic timing values them: difficulty with dates attached is manageable.
Worked example: a chart has Mars strong in Capricorn — exalted — in the 6th house of enemies, disease and competition. The malefic sits in the best house for malefics (the upachaya 6th), at peak dignity. Classic reading: a formidable competitor, someone whose conflicts (Mars) resolve into victory (exaltation) over rivals and illness alike. The same Mars debilitated in Cancer in the 1st would read very differently — temper turned on the self, health friction — needing different counsel.
That contrast is the whole point. A malefic's worth is positional. The 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses welcome them; the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 9th feel them. Strength converts severity into achievement; weakness lets severity land raw. Fear the reading, not the planet — most charts with strong malefics belong to people who get things done.
